Someone once said that following Jesus is like doing a trapeeze act. You cannot work the trapeeze correctly without completely letting go of the end you are holding on to, you have to fly free before you can get "held" by your partner. Most people want to hold on to what they have until they are sure about where they are going. Once safely at the new place they are willing to let go. Discipleship doesn't work like that - if you never let go, you cannot follow.
Jesus calls us to follow. But what does it mean to follow Jesus? How can I follow Jesus today? We can learn to follow Jesus today by noticing what Jesus meant when he called his original disciples to follow him.
